About Foxglove Media
Foxglove Media is an independent publisher of four subscription newsletters covering housing, transit, food systems and regional politics. Twelve people, no investors, and every dollar of revenue comes from readers who choose to pay. That arrangement is clarifying: if the writing is not good, we find out quickly.
This is a part-time role at 20 to 25 hours a week, editing our transit title and helping the writers on the other three.
What you'll do
- Edit three issues a week for our transit newsletter, working with two staff writers and a rotating cast of contributors.
- Do line editing that improves the argument rather than just the sentences, and structural editing when a piece has buried its point in paragraph nine.
- Commission freelance work, brief writers clearly, and pay them promptly, which matters more to freelancers than most editors admit.
- Fact-check claims that carry risk, and push back when a piece is more confident than the evidence supports.
- Write headlines and subject lines that are accurate and still make someone open the email.
- Look at open rates, reply volume and cancellation reasons with the growth lead, and change editorial approach when the data says something real.
What we're looking for
- Four or more years editing published work, whether at a publication, a newsletter, or a strong freelance practice.
- A genuine feel for the newsletter form, which rewards a specific voice and punishes filler.
- Reporting instincts. You should know when a claim needs a source and how to get one.
- The judgement to protect a writer's voice while still making the piece better.
- Reliability on a fixed publishing schedule, since readers notice when an issue is late.
- Availability for around 20 to 25 hours a week with some overlap with United States Central Time.
Nice to have
- Interest in or knowledge of transit, urbanism or infrastructure policy.
- Experience with an email platform such as Ghost or Buttondown, including basic analytics.
- Some data literacy for handling ridership statistics and municipal budgets.
Benefits
- Asynchronous work with one weekly editorial call and everything else in writing.
- USD 1,000 annual budget for courses, conferences and subscriptions to other publications.
- Mental health support through a stipend you can spend as you see fit.
- Paid on the fifteenth of each month, without exception. We know what it is like to chase an invoice.
